Wednesday Mic at P&Gs Bar

  • This mic can either be loads of fun, or incredibly frustrating to new comics.

    First the positives:

The venue is a bar. Drinks are pricey but if you get there before 7, happy hour is a decent value. This leads to a very fun and energetic atmosphere.

The crowd tends to be very supportive, and the DJ of the mic is a garrulous, fun guy who enjoys what he does. Most comics will stay to the end to support their fellow artists.

The energy/vibe of the room makes it a great place to workshop new material.

Minus the cost of drinks, it's FREE!

    Now the drawbacks:

The DJ plays everyone onto stage with an exciting upbeat song. This is great! However he also throws goofy radio sound effects into the middle of a comics set, sometimes at seemingly random moments. The sound effects can be fun, but can be incredibly disruptive and distracting to beginners.

The DJ tends to throw his two cents into your set occasionally and if you're not ready to throw it back, it can really derail your timing.

The waitress is rude, pushy and has a tendency to talk loudly during a comics routine. I believe she overcharges for drinks based on my extremely high bar bill for only a few cocktails. Get your drinks from the bartender.

The room tends to get pretty packed-much like an old school comedy club. Great to have a large audience. Horrible for moving in and out to get to the bathroom.

Overall, this mic is definitely worth hitting, but be warned-come and watch once or twice until you get a sense of what you're in for.

  • Good mic. Good vibe. I think they screw you for time to make sure everybody who didn't sign up gets in. Doesn't seem fair to those who actually know how to be on time. Sound effects are kind of lame.

  • Yes, they play sound effects when you go up, but they're not terribly disruptive. I think the sound guy tries to use the sound to help the gaps in your timing rather than disrupt you, and you can ask not to play them.

There are a few other things that are more annoying than the sound effects:

The MC laughs really loudly at seemingly random points.

The two round format is kind of fluffy and unnecessary.

The place starts to fill up with bar patrons in the rooms that are on either side of the niche where the mic is held, this is very disruptive to the show.

By the time there are people everywhere, the audience is hardly paying attention.

I would say this is a good mic to learn how to deal with heckling and other thing that interrupt your flow, but in terms of fleshing out material, not the best spot.

The night that I went, the performers were pretty bad, but the audience wasn't very good either (same people I guess).
