A very warm, inclusive, supportive mic (great for new comics). It's presided over by Gladys, a comedy institution and whirling dervish force of nature, who will give you notes at the end of your set.
Not supportive at all, this mic is run by beginner comics who are disciples to Gladys. The cover (11 dollars including 1 drink) makes it hardly worth the jaded silence greeting the performer as fellow comics review their notes, ignore and even heckle (yes heckle) new performers who aren't part of the boys' club.
Gladys is a story all her own. She ropes in new comics by telling them she has "connections in the industry" and that if they stick with her she can guarantee they'll be "huge stars." The talent of said comics and the smarmy attitude of the emcees she chooses should speak to the invalidity of that statement. Gladys likes to give notes to comics at the end of their sets which always sound the same- "You're very good." "Don't waste your time with other mics." "Bring more people next time." "I'm going to talk to my connections to make you famous."
The club personnel and owners seem to hold the same negative view of Gladys and her fans, and when asked they reply in unison: Save your money-there are much better mics out there for half the price and frustration. Watch one of her shows (That'll be 7 dollars, please), and you'll probably agree.
Glady's Open Mic Freaking SUCKS!!!! Pay $11 ,for what! Honestly not supportive at all! Please don't waste your time! Its a separate entity from the Comic Strip itself! If your very talented and Funny, honestly, she wouldn't know what to do with you! She pulls Beginning Comics in like Suckers! Yo there are better mics at way cheaper prices and very supportive!
Gladys is a con artist, and the dudes who kiss her tookus thinking she's going to make them famous need to wake up. Every week, it's the same faces telling the same hack jokes, and Gladys tells the audience they're going to be famous. It's not even an open mic, she tells you you have to bring people if you want to perform. But it's not a bringer, because you still need to pay her to perform.
Scam scam scam. Gladys, be ashamed of yourself. Comics, get a hold of your senses. We get exploited enough while following this dream, time to stop flushing our money and time away with this type of garbage.
Are there really still people who do this? I went a few times a year ago and it was miserable. Everybody there spent the whole time kissing Gladys' ass, and she came up to me after the show dropping names and telling me she would hook me up in the business. There was only one problem: She told me she was connected with an agent that is a friend of mine. I asked-He'd never heard of her. I don't know what she's been telling these guys who worship her, but it's probably all B.S.
No matter how you feel about Gladys, Comic Strip is just too expensive. Beers are over $10, which is unreasonable for an open mic and/or a bringer show. Have stayed away from this overpriced venue since they raised their drink prices. NOT WORTH IT!
