Connect the dots

There is only one rule when it comes to writing comedy - there are no rules. But there are guidelines that make writing a lot easier. Most stand-up comedy is made of jokes, and most jokes are made of two or more unrelated variables connected together. Those variables could be food, sports, people, cows, stereotypes, etc. It is this connection between variables that makes or breaks the joke. The stronger the connection, the better the joke. The more unrelated the variables, the better the joke. How about an example? "I think foosball is a combination of soccer and shish kebabs." - Mitch Hedberg.
